The economic stimulus bill passed by Congress — known as the American Reinvestment & Recovery Act of 2009 — includes significant tax credits for homeowners who make their homes more energy efficient.  A 30% tax credit (up to $1,500) can be taken against the cost of qualifying replacement windows and doors.

Not All Products Qualify for a Tax Break

Not all replacement windows and doors qualify for the tax credits! Even if a product has EnergyStar certification, it may not be eligible for the tax credit. In fact, very few windows and doors meet the stringent criteria necessary, so buyer beware!

These tax credits are available only on qualifying products that offer significant energy savings when installed. Here are the criteria:

Exterior Windows and Skylights 

• U factor of 0.30 or lower
  
• Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) 0.30  or lower      
  
• Not all ENERGY STAR labeled windows and skylights qualify for tax credit.

Exterior Doors

• U factor of 0.30 or lower
  
• Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) 0.30  or lower      
  
• Not all ENERGY STAR doors will qualify.
